Malbim for Yeshayahu 1:4
Here is a loose translation, which might help you for the test:
"הוי" is a word indicating calling [someone's attention to]. This entire פסוק is the subject of the פסוק following it: "על מה תכו". He said: "Behold! You are a sinning nation, you are a nation heavy with sin, who has left God, etc., and I ask you - for what purpose are you being physically punished?"
"עם כבד עון" - The נביא increases the severity of their sins by degrees:
He says -
Not only are you a גוי חוטא, who sins בשוגג (accidentally, with some amount of negligence), but you are also an "עם כבד עון", who sins במזיד (intentionally). And, it is not simply that you sin occasionally, but you are "זרע מרעים", meaning that you sin constantly. And you do not simply sin to fulfill your desire or achieve some other goal, rather you are "בנים משחיתים", who sin with nothing to gain and not to fulfill any desire, but just to sin.
The נביא does not only increase the degree of the sin, but he also increases the degree of the sinner. Therefore, in the order גוי, then עם, then זרע, then בנים, each level is more important than the previous one, just like even a small sin will be more severe if a great man transgressed it.
"עזבו את ה" - He (the נביא) continues to say - if, even with the severity of the sin and the greatness of the sinner, you would not have left God completely, and you would be like the שומרונים (Samaritans) who feared God and swerved idols, [it would not have been as bad as what you did,] but you went and left God completely!
"נאצו" - He (the נביא) continues to say - if, even with the severity of the sin and the greatness of the sinner, you would not have disgraced God and made Him angry, and if your intention had only been to break the yoke, [it would not have been as bad as what you did,] but you specifically sinned to make God angry!
"נזרו אחור" - He (the נביא) continues to say - if, even with the severity of the sin and the greatness of the sinner, you would just have wanted freedom from all worship, and you would not have worshipped any deity - not God and not any other god, He would have judged them favorably, for baseless love and their desire for freedom would have been what led them astray. However, they seperated from God and regressed to worshipping their previous gods, thinking that serving other gods was better than serving God. Whereas, in reality, "גדול עונם מנשא" - the worship of other gods is a greater burden to bear, because it will demand from them to sacrifice their children.
